Meet Alexis Thrower
Speaker | Communication Consultant | Trainer | Author
Dr. Alexis Thrower is a multi-award-winning communication practitioner, author, professor, and speaker. She prioritizes her efforts with culturally responsive and career-readiness frameworks to primarily serve people who have been historically marginalized. She is now expanding her efforts to further serve students, individuals, and organizations needing clarity on how to effectively prioritize, communicate, and put equity into practice in their respective career and professional development endeavors.
Leaning into her commitment to student-centered service and adult learning philosophies, some of her professional milestones include authoring a guidebook (Figuring Sh*t Out: The Guidebook for Landing a Job within your Field of Study Fresh Out of College) for college students to equip them with tools to implement while enrolled to successfully transition into the workforce within their field of study upon graduating, working as a Communication Studies adjunct professor for the past five years training students in the field as practitioners and public speakers, and launching and implementing the multi-award-winning university-wide student newsletter for a higher education institution in Southern California, co-creating an entirely new student communication function that did not exist prior to her arrival.
Dr. Thrower’s additional professional endeavors include working as a news anchor, producer, and reporter in Eugene, OR, and Shreveport, LA, speaking to her ability to engage with community stakeholders, deliver a strong public speaking presence, and advocate for underserved groups. This is evident by her ties with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s subsector BOSS, which stands for Black Outreach Subcommittee for Screening. This group raises awareness about preventive and screening options for colorectal cancer within the Black community. Thrower also actively serves in the media and youth departments with her church, and has done so since she was a young girl.
Alexis Thrower earned her PhD in education with a concentration in urban leadership and inclusive excellence in college teaching certificate from Claremont Graduate University. She also holds a master’s degree in communication with a dual emphasis in health communication and public and media relations from Johns Hopkins University. In an effort to continue her own learnings, she also earned a women and leadership certificate from Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business. Her bachelor’s degrees are from Cal State LA in communications and television, film and media studies (broadcast journalism).
